The CBSE Mathematics Class 11 syllabus for 2026-27 is structured across 5 units — Sets & Functions, Algebra, Coordinate Geometry, Calculus, and Statistics & Probability. The theory paper is 80 marks, with a further 20 marks from Internal Assessment. This is a rigorous, concept-driven course that lays the direct foundation for Class 12 Mathematics. The highest-weightage unit. Master AP & GP (AM-GM relation is frequently tested), Permutations & Combinations (understand when to use each), Binomial Theorem (Pascal's triangle & applications), Complex Numbers (Argand plane), and Linear Inequalities. Each sub-topic is independently testable.
Sets & Venn diagrams are very scoring — formula-based and mechanical. Relations & Functions (domain, range, types of functions) are concept-heavy but essential for Class 12. Trigonometry is the most conceptually demanding part — understand identities from first principles rather than memorising them in isolation.
Standard Deviation and Variance are formula-driven and highly scoring with practice. Probability — focus on event types, axiomatic definition, and combined event formulae. Avoid mixing up mutually exclusive and exhaustive events.
Straight lines are formula-based — different forms of equations, slope, distance of a point from a line. Conic sections (circle, parabola, ellipse, hyperbola) require understanding standard forms and their properties. 3D Geometry is straightforward — distance formula and coordinates.
Limits and Derivatives carry only 8 marks in the summative paper but are conceptually vital — they are the direct gateway to Class 12 Calculus (Continuity, Differentiability, Integration). Understand limits from first principles and the definition of a derivative geometrically. These 8 marks are very scoring once concepts are clear, and the investment pays dividends in Class 12.
Every CBSE exam question is rooted in NCERT. Solve every exercise and every miscellaneous question in NCERT before picking up any reference book. NCERT is not just enough — it is the foundation.
The compound angle, double angle, and sum-to-product identities follow from each other logically. Build them from sin²x + cos²x = 1 and compound angle formulae rather than memorising 20 isolated formulas. Understanding one derivation unlocks several others.
Always show complete step-wise working. Teachers award method marks even if your final answer is wrong — a well-presented incomplete solution can still earn you 3 out of 5 marks.
Permutations & Combinations is one of the most frequently misunderstood topics. Before using any formula, understand the Fundamental Principle of Counting. Know when order matters (permutation) and when it doesn't (combination). Practice with diverse problem types.
The AM-GM inequality and the relationship between Arithmetic Mean and Geometric Mean is tested repeatedly. Know both AP and GP formulas cold. Practice application-type problems where you identify which type of sequence is implied.
There is 33% internal choice in all sections of the paper. In your practice sessions, always attempt all options so you know which type of questions you can answer most confidently before exam day.
Limits & Derivatives → Class 12 Calculus: Limits and the first principle definition of a derivative in Class 11 are the conceptual gateway to Continuity, Differentiability, and Integration in Class 12. A student who understands them properly in Class 11 will find Class 12 Calculus significantly easier.Relations & Functions → Class 12 Functions: Domain, range, types of functions, and composition studied in Class 11 return directly in Class 12 for Inverse Trigonometric Functions and applications of derivatives (increasing/decreasing functions, maxima/minima).Trigonometry → Class 12 Inverse Trig: The identity work done in Class 11 Trigonometry feeds directly into Inverse Trigonometric Functions in Class 12. A weak Class 11 Trigonometry foundation makes Class 12 Inverse Trig feel impossibly abstract.
