What's new in the 2026-27 syllabus?

Marks have been reshuffled: Number System dropped from 10 to 7, Geometry from 27 to 25, Mensuration increased to 14, and Statistics & Probability are now clubbed together for 10 marks. Sequences and Progressions and Introduction to Probability are brand-new additions, and Algebraic Identities is now its own dedicated chapter. The syllabus also explicitly integrates India's mathematical history — Baudhayana's Sulbasutras, Brahmagupta's formula, Aryabhata's origin of sine/cosine, and Madhava's series for π — alongside a stated focus on computational thinking in every chapter.

NCERT has replaced the old "Mathematics: Textbook for Class IX" with a renamed, restructured book — Ganita Manjari — for 2026-27. Part I covers 8 chapters with curiosity-led, story-driven chapter names, built around reasoning and proof rather than rote procedure.

Ganita Manjari asks students to reason and explain rather than simply calculate and memorise — questions often appear before the method is taught, and chapter titles read more like conversations than topics. NCERT has so far published only Part I, covering 8 chapters.

Ganita Manjari — Part II (Expected)

Inferred from the official CBSE syllabus — not an NCERT-confirmed chapter list

NCERT has published only Part I of Ganita Manjari so far. The official CBSE syllabus for 2026-27, however, lists 15 chapters in total across 6 units — and Part I's 8 chapters map to only 8 of those. That leaves 7 topics the syllabus requires that must be covered in a Part II, once NCERT releases it. Why we expect exactly these 7 chapters

Part I's 8 chapters correspond one-to-one with 8 of the syllabus's 15 listed topics (Coordinate Geometry, Polynomials, Number System, Algebraic Identities, Circles, Area & Perimeter, Probability, and Sequences & Progressions). The remaining 7 — all of Unit IV's Euclidean geometry chapters, plus Linear Equations, Surface Area & Volume, and Statistics — have no home in Part I, so they must appear in Part II for the syllabus to be fully covered. We'll update this page the moment NCERT publishes it.

A Note for Class 9 Maths Teachers

Mapping the Lab Practical (5 Marks) to Ganita Manjari

This section is written specifically for teachers, not parents or students — it's about which lab activities to actually schedule this year, not what to study for exams.

CBSE's own syllabus document names the Lab Practical's prescribed books as the Guidelines for Mathematics Laboratory in Schools (CBSE) and the Laboratory Manual — Mathematics, Secondary Stage (NCERT) — the same standing ~34-activity manual that's been used for years, not something newly written for Ganita Manjari. That leaves the actual chapter-to-activity mapping up to each school. Below is our own crosswalk, built by matching each activity's topic against Ganita Manjari Part I's chapters and the syllabus's stated Part II topics. Activity numbering varies slightly between reprints, so we've listed activities by title rather than number.

Two genuine gaps within Part I — not an oversight on your part

Ch. 2, Introduction to Linear Polynomials has no matching activity in the old manual (it predates this framing of slope and y-intercept) — a simple substitute is plotting y = ax + b for a few chosen values of a and b, then having students physically measure the slope off the graph. Ch. 8, Sequences and Progressions is brand new to the syllabus this year, so it's unsurprisingly absent too — but the syllabus itself names the Tower of Hanoi puzzle and fractal applications of GP as built-in explorations, and either works well as the lab activity for this chapter.

Maths at Advanced Level (Optional)

From 2026-27, CBSE has introduced an Advanced Level in Maths alongside the standard course for Class 9 (extending to Class 10 in 2027-28). It is entirely optional — students may choose to appear for the Advanced exam in addition to, not instead of, the mandatory Standard Maths paper. It is based on its own separate textbook and is aimed at students who want to go beyond the standard syllabus with HOTS-style questions.

How the Advanced exam works

Separate optional paper, on top of the mandatory Standard Maths exam — not a replacement for it

Every Class 9 student sits the mandatory Standard Maths paper. Those who want an extra challenge can additionally opt for the Advanced exam, based on this separate textbook and weighted heavily towards Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions. Students scoring 50% or above get "The Advanced Level has been successfully cleared" noted on their marksheet — but Advanced marks are not added into the overall aggregate. Students may choose no Advanced subject, only Maths Advanced, only Science Advanced, or both.
